Digital Arrest Scams in India: How to Spot Them and What to Do

By Digital Forensics Team••8 min read

The phone rings. A voice says a parcel in your name has been seized with drugs and fake passports. Minutes later you are on a video call with a "police officer" in uniform, a station backdrop behind him, telling you that you are under digital arrest and must not speak to anyone. By the end of the day, you have transferred your savings to a "verification account". This is one of the fastest-growing frauds in India, and it targets doctors, engineers, retired officers and students alike.

The single most important fact: there is no such thing as a digital arrest. No Indian law enforcement agency arrests, questions or holds anyone over a video call, and none will ever ask you to transfer money to prove your innocence.

How a Digital Arrest Scam Usually Unfolds

1. The hook

The first call comes from one of a few familiar stories:

  • Courier parcel: a package in your name, held by customs, contains drugs, passports or cash
  • SIM or Aadhaar misuse: your number or Aadhaar has been linked to money laundering or a crime
  • Telecom disconnection: "TRAI" will cut your number because of illegal activity
  • Family member in trouble: your son or daughter has been detained and needs to be "settled"

2. The transfer to a "senior officer"

You are "connected" to the police, CBI, ED or NCB. The caller moves you to a video call on Skype, WhatsApp or a similar app. Fake ID cards, uniforms, seals and arrest warrants are shown on screen.

3. Isolation

You are told the case is confidential and that talking to family, a lawyer or the local police will make things worse. Victims are often asked to stay on camera for hours, sometimes overnight, in a closed room.

4. The payment

Finally comes the "solution": transfer your funds to a "RBI-supervised" or "government" account for verification, with a promise that it will be returned once you are cleared. Some victims are pushed to break fixed deposits, take personal loans or sell gold.

Warning Signs: Hang Up If You Hear This

  • 🚩 "You are under digital arrest" or "stay on video call until the investigation is over"
  • 🚩 Any demand to transfer money, buy gift cards or pay in crypto to "verify" your funds
  • 🚩 Instructions not to tell your family, your bank or local police
  • 🚩 Warrants, FIR copies or notices sent over WhatsApp
  • 🚩 Calls from international numbers or numbers starting with +92, +855, +84 etc. claiming to be Indian officials
  • 🚩 Pressure, threats and a countdown ("you will be arrested in 2 hours")
  • 🚩 Being asked to download a screen-sharing or remote access app

Real agencies serve notices in writing and in person, through proper legal process. You always have the right to consult a lawyer and to verify with your local police station.

What to Do If You Are Targeted

If the call is happening now

  • End the call. You do not need anyone's permission to hang up
  • Do not transfer any money or share OTPs, bank details or screen access
  • Tell a family member immediately; isolation is what the scam depends on
  • Report the number on the Chakshu facility of the government's Sanchar Saathi portal

If you have already paid

  • Call 1930, the national cyber crime helpline, as early as possible
  • File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in with transaction IDs, account numbers and UPI IDs
  • Call your bank's fraud line and ask them to raise a dispute and flag the beneficiary accounts
  • Visit your local police station or cyber cell with a printed copy of the complaint

Preserve the evidence

  • Screenshots of call logs, chat messages, video call screens and documents shown to you
  • Bank statements and transaction receipts
  • Phone numbers, Skype IDs, email addresses and any links you were sent
  • A written timeline of what happened, while your memory is fresh

Do not delete the chats or factory-reset your phone. If you are unsure how to preserve evidence, read our guide on digital evidence collection.

Why Educated People Fall For It

Victims are not careless. These scams are run by organised groups with scripts, fake sets and several people playing different roles. They use:

  • Authority: uniforms and official language trigger instinctive compliance
  • Fear: the threat of jail and public shame shuts down careful thinking
  • Urgency: victims are never given time to step back and verify
  • Isolation: once you cannot talk to anyone, there is no one to say "this is a scam"

Talk to elderly parents and relatives about this scam. A two-minute conversation now can save years of savings later.

How We Support Victims

Our cyber fraud investigation team works alongside the police complaint, not instead of it. We help with:

  • Organising evidence and building a clear, dated timeline for the cyber cell
  • Open-source tracing of phone numbers, websites, social profiles and payment handles used by the fraudsters
  • Identifying links to other reported cases that can strengthen the complaint
  • Guidance for families, particularly when an elderly parent has been targeted

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the police or CBI place someone under "digital arrest"?

No. There is no such thing as a digital arrest under Indian law. Police, CBI, ED, NCB or customs officers do not arrest people over a video call, do not keep people under watch on Skype or WhatsApp, and never ask you to transfer money to "verify" or "secure" it.

I already transferred money. Is there any chance of recovery?

Yes, if you act quickly. Call 1930 or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in immediately. Fast reporting allows banks to freeze money that is still sitting in the first or second layer of mule accounts. The first few hours matter most.

The callers knew my Aadhaar number and address. Does that mean they are real?

No. Personal details are widely available from data leaks, courier records and social media. Scammers use them to sound convincing. Knowing your details proves nothing about who they are.

How can a private investigator help in a digital arrest case?

We help victims preserve evidence correctly, prepare a clear timeline for the police complaint, trace the digital footprint of numbers, accounts and websites used, and support the family through the process. Recovery of money and arrests are handled by police and banks; our role is to make the complaint stronger and faster.
